Frozen Hash Browns in the Air Fryer: Crisp, Not Greasy

To cook frozen hash browns in the air fryer, put them in straight from frozen, in a single layer with gaps between them, and cook at 180°C for 10-15 minutes, turning them once halfway. If your machine runs cool, use 200°C for about 12 minutes, then turn them and give them 2 more. Don’t defrost them and don’t add oil. Shop-bought hash browns are usually fried before they’re frozen (Morrisons describes its own as “pre-fried in sunflower oil”), so the air fryer only has to heat them through and crisp the outside. They’re done when both sides are deep golden and the edges snap.

That’s why they come out less greasy than the oven or frying pan versions: there’s nothing to add, and any oil that loosens drips through the basket.

Times from three UK sources

Hash browns are a finishing job, like the frozen chips in the air fryer. The cooking was done at the factory. Three UK sources I read on 15 October 2026 give slightly different times, and the spread tells you how much air fryers vary:

SourceTemperatureTimeTurning
Morrisons Hash Browns packet instructions180°C, preheated10-12 minShake halfway
Liana’s Kitchen180°C15 minFlip halfway
Feast Glorious Feast200°C12 min, then 2 moreTurn for the last 2 minutes

So the honest answer is 10 to 15 minutes. Start checking at 10. A small basket, a full basket and a machine that’s already hot will all move the time by a few minutes. Check the packet for your brand too: the Morrisons instructions were written for a 4-litre air fryer and a 140g portion, and they say smaller portions may need less time.

Step by step

  1. Preheat if your air fryer needs it. The Morrisons packet says preheat to 180°C. Feast Glorious Feast points out that “not all models advise preheating”, so follow your own manual.
  2. Lay them flat, in one layer, with space between them. Feast Glorious Feast fits four in a 3.8-litre basket. Liana’s Kitchen says to leave “a little bit of space between each one”. Stacked or overlapping hash browns steam each other and come out pale and soft in the middle.
  3. No oil, no defrosting. Liana’s Kitchen says to put them in “straight from the freezer”.
  4. Cook, then turn once. Halfway is the usual advice. Tongs are easier than shaking, because flat patties don’t flip themselves.
  5. Check, then add a minute or two if needed. You want deep golden on both sides, not pale yellow. Liana’s Kitchen says that if they aren’t crisp, return them “for a further minute or two”.
  6. Let them stand for a minute. The packet says so, and it’s worth it: the outside firms up as the steam escapes.

Why they go soggy (and how to fix it)

  • Too many in the basket. This is the main cause. Cook in two batches rather than one crowded one, and check the second batch a little earlier, because the machine is already hot.
  • They were part-thawed. A hash brown that’s been sitting on the side goes limp and sticks. Keep them in the freezer until the basket is ready.
  • Pulled out too early. The middle can be hot while the outside is still soft. Give them another minute or two.
  • A liner under them. Feast Glorious Feast doesn’t use one, and notes that liners stop cooking juices dripping through, which “can stop food from crisping all the way around”.

The full breakfast in one machine

Hash browns and sausages both cook at 180°C, which makes a weekend breakfast easy. My sausages in the air fryer guide has 10-12 minutes for standard pork sausages, turned at halfway. If you have a dual-drawer machine, start the sausages first, then put the hash browns in the second drawer. In a single basket, cook the sausages, keep them warm, and do the hash browns after.

Beans go in a pan on the hob and eggs in a frying pan. If fish fingers are the safe food in your house, fish fingers in the air fryer pair well with hash browns for a beige-but-happy tea.

What they cost, and the salt

On 15 October 2026, a 750g bag of Morrisons Hash Browns cost £1.75 (~$2.30). The packet says it holds five portions of three hash browns, so that’s about 12p a hash brown. As a side, they’re about as cheap as potatoes get without peeling any.

They’re also seasoned. Morrisons lists 0.49g of salt per three oven-cooked hash browns. The NHS salt guidance says children aged 1 to 3 should have no more than 2g of salt a day, and 4 to 6 year olds no more than 3g. A portion of hash browns is fine, but next to sausages, beans and ketchup the salt adds up quickly. For little ones, two hash browns and no extra salt on top is plenty.

Leftovers: cook what you’ll eat

Cook only what you’ll eat. The Morrisons packet says plainly “Do not reheat”. Some recipe writers do crisp up leftovers in the air fryer, but if your packet says not to, follow the packet. They take ten minutes from frozen, so there’s no reason to cook extra.

Uncooked hash browns go straight back in the freezer. Close the bag tightly so they don’t pick up frost and stick together.

FAQ

How long do frozen hash browns take in the air fryer?

About 10 to 15 minutes at 180°C, turned once halfway. At 200°C, allow about 12 minutes plus 2 after turning. Start checking at 10 minutes, as air fryers vary.

Do you need to defrost hash browns before air frying?

No. Cook them straight from frozen. Thawed hash browns go soft, stick to the basket and don’t crisp as well.

Do you need oil for hash browns in the air fryer?

Usually not. Most shop-bought frozen hash browns are fried before freezing (Morrisons’ own are “pre-fried in sunflower oil”), so they crisp without any extra. Check the packet if you’re unsure.

Can you cook hash browns and sausages in the air fryer together?

Yes, they both cook at 180°C. In a dual-drawer air fryer, start the sausages first, as they take a little longer. In one basket, cook them in turn so neither is crowded.

Can you reheat cooked hash browns?

Check the packet. Morrisons’ own-brand packet says “Do not reheat”, so cook only what you’ll eat at one sitting.
