Potato Waffles in the Air Fryer: Time, Temp and Crisping
To cook frozen potato waffles in the air fryer, put them straight in from frozen, in a single layer, and cook at 180°C for 8 to 11 minutes, turning them halfway. You don’t need to defrost them or add oil, because there’s already oil in them. They’re done when both sides are crisp and golden and the middle is piping hot. Mini potato waffles are quicker, at about 6 to 8 minutes at 200°C. Let them stand for a minute before they go on the plate, because the inside holds heat.
That’s the whole answer. The rest of this is the small stuff that decides whether you get a crisp waffle or a floppy one.
Times from two UK packets and one recipe site
I read these on 31 October 2026. Morrisons prints the pack instructions on its product pages, so these are the times on the bags:
| Waffles | Temperature | Time | What the packet says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birds Eye 10 Potato Waffles | 180°C, preheated for 3½ min | 8-10 min | Max 2 pieces, turn halfway, stand 1 minute |
| Morrisons Potato Waffles | 180°C, preheated | 10-11 min | Based on a 4-litre air fryer and 2 waffles, single layer, shake halfway |
| Birds Eye Mini Potato Waffles | 200°C, preheated for 3½ min | 6-8 min | Max 6 waffles, shake halfway |
| Recipe This | 180°C, no preheat | 8 min | No oil, no turning |
So the honest range for full-size waffles is 8 to 11 minutes at 180°C, and your own bag wins. The own-brand ones are thicker, so they need the longer end.
Notice how small those test batches are. Birds Eye says a maximum of two waffles and Morrisons times its instructions on two. That’s one child’s tea. For three of you, either cook in two rounds or add a couple of minutes and check them. Morrisons also says “do not overfill the air fryer”.
Step by step
- Preheat if your air fryer needs it. Both packets say to, and Birds Eye gives 3½ minutes at 180°C. Recipe This skips it and cooks for 8 minutes. If you skip it, use the longer end of the time.
- One layer, flat. Don’t stack them. A waffle lying on another waffle steams on the bottom and stays pale. If you have a small basket, two flat in the middle is better than four overlapping.
- No oil. The Birds Eye ingredients list rapeseed oil and the Morrisons ones sunflower oil, so the fat is already in there. Extra oil just makes them greasy.
- Turn halfway. Shaking works for minis. Full-size waffles flip better with tongs. A pair with silicone heads, like the OXO Good Grips 23cm tongs, won’t scratch a non-stick basket.
- Check, then stand. Crisp and golden on both sides, piping hot in the middle. Then leave them for a minute.
Why they come out soft, and how to fix it
- Too many in the basket. This is the usual one. The packets are written for two waffles for a reason.
- Pulled out too early. A waffle that’s golden on top can still be soft underneath. Give it another minute or two after flipping.
- Different air fryers. Morrisons says plainly that “cooking appliances vary”. A small 2-litre basket with the element close to the food runs hotter than a big drawer, so keep an eye on the first batch and note what worked.
- Too dark at the edges? Morrisons says smaller portions may need less time “to avoid excessive browning”. If you’re cooking one waffle for a toddler, start checking a couple of minutes early.
The toaster option, if the air fryer is full
On a night when the air fryer is busy with fish fingers in the air fryer, Birds Eye’s packet gives a toaster method: two toasting cycles, about 5 minutes, then leave the waffles to stand in the switched-off toaster for 1 minute and take them out carefully. The packet warns that the waffles and the toaster “will be very hot”. The Morrisons packet gives only oven and air fryer times, so stick to those for own-brand. The oven is the slow option: 220°C (fan 200°C) for 12 to 15 minutes for Birds Eye, or 16 to 20 minutes for Morrisons.
What they cost, and the salt
Prices from Morrisons’ website on 31 October 2026:
| Bag | Price | Roughly per waffle | Salt per 2 waffles (oven baked) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birds Eye 10 Potato Waffles, 567g | £2.35 (~$3.10) | 24p | 0.67g |
| Morrisons Potato Waffles, 680g (6 portions of 2) | £1.45 (~$1.90) | 12p | 0.38g |
| Birds Eye Mini Potato Waffles, 456g | £2.95 (~$3.90) | 12p a mini (8 portions of 3) | 0.33g per 3 minis |
Here’s the boujee-on-a-budget lesson. The own-brand bag is bigger, costs about half as much per waffle, and lists less salt per portion. The Birds Eye bag was on a “Buy 4 for £5” offer on the day I looked, but that ends with orders on 1 November, so don’t plan around it.
On salt, the NHS salt guidance says children aged 1 to 3 should have no more than 2g a day, and 4 to 6 year olds no more than 3g. Two waffles are a small slice of that. Two waffles with beans, ketchup and a sausage add up faster, so leave the salt shaker off that plate.
Easy teas built on a waffle
A potato waffle is a safe food in a lot of houses, and it’s a good base to build on:
- Beans and cheese. Recipe This serves theirs with baked beans and grated cheese on top. It’s ugly, and it gets eaten.
- Waffle, egg and peas. A fried or scrambled egg on top and a few peas on the side.
- The beige platter. Waffles next to hash browns in the air fryer is too much potato. Waffles next to chicken nuggets in the air fryer and some cucumber sticks is a proper tea.
If you’re trying to widen a picky eater’s list, put one new food in a tiny portion next to the waffle, not on top of it. A topping they didn’t ask for can make the whole plate unsafe.
Leftovers: cook what you’ll eat
The Morrisons packet says “Do not reheat”, and both Birds Eye bags say “Do not refreeze after defrosting”. So cook only what will be eaten, put the bag straight back in the freezer, and don’t leave it on the side while the first batch cooks. They take ten minutes from frozen, so there’s no reason to cook extra.
FAQ

Do you need to defrost potato waffles before air frying?
No. Cook them from frozen. Both brands give air fryer times from frozen, and Birds Eye says not to refreeze them once defrosted.

No. They already contain oil. Recipe This says there’s no need to brush them with oil or season them.
How long do mini potato waffles take in the air fryer?
Birds Eye says 6 to 8 minutes at 200°C, up to six at a time, shaken halfway.
Can you reheat potato waffles in the air fryer?
The Morrisons packet says “Do not reheat”, so it’s best to cook only what you’ll eat.
